Hummmmmm.
That sound reverberated through the Weyr. It drew everyone to the Sands like a magnet.
Even the pink riders carefully put down their cleaning tools and the like to head for the Sands.
"Deran, your belt's crooked," Iri said as she made her way quickly across the bowl. All arguments set aside, the siblings would face the eggs together.
Deran straightened it, then glanced at Iri. "You have a huge strand of hair that's not in your ponytail."
She sighed and reached up to fix it. "The dragons won't care."
"The people in the Stands will."
And they were there, together. Both bowed to the clutch's dam, and then they moved to a good position, close together.
Iri's biggest fear was that Deran would Impress pink.
Her second biggest was that -one- of them would. If they both did, they would at least have each other. If one did, they would be expected to forget they were brother and sister.
She could not do that.
Deran's thoughts were similar. He knew what he wanted. "Silver bronze," he murmured.
Iri heard him. "Teal," she challenged.
"Gold," he retaliated with.
She laughed, relaxing. For now.

Alexei was in the kitchen, doing some chores. When the hum began, he dropped everything and ran to the candidate barracks. He met Gavrie on the way, and the pair quickly changed into their candidate robes and hurried to the sands. They entered side by side, their faces adorned with nearly identical expressions of excitement and fear. Together, they bowed to the Scarlet and took their place among the candidates.
Gavrie looked over the eggs, wondering which would hatch first. A Hatching was a good thing, but it also brought plenty of stress. Some of them would walk off the sands today as lowly servants. Shaking his head, he forced himself to focus on the happy aspects of a Hatching, not thinking about the pinks.

Lainy walked quietly out onto the sands. She realized that the first egg had already hatched, the big Raspberry egg. It was a gold, almost like those of the continentals, but everyone knew that it was not the same, Marketa didn't have continental blood.
The big gold glared at the few candidates and then walked up to a defiant looking girl. This girl had left the New Island Hold because she didn't want to grow up to be some regular person, she had wanted to ride a dragon. The girl's name was Faerta. She was going to impress.
Dragon's Name: Tagth (Tag is a German form of hello to a familiar person) Color: Gold Age: just born Appearance: Tagth could be called a motley gold, with dark and light spots, dull and shiny spots all over her hide. She has a delicate head for a dragon with a delicate body and wiry muscles like her rider. She is built long, skinny, and delicate looking. She is not a flashy looking gold and she blends in better than some golds with the landscape because of her motley coloring, though she is still a gold and no gold can ever truly blend in with anything. Their color is just to pale gold for them to blend well, and Tagth is no exception to the rule. Tagth is an extra large sized dragon. Personality: Tagth hates being in big crowds and hates crowding, from people. She loves being with other dragons though and her rider. She is very motherly, though when she was younger she was the one that needed mothering. She is quite the character. She is ok with flits, as long as the little buggers don't bond to HER rider. They can bath her and stay around her, they just can't bond to her rider. She is very much attached to her rider. She is also a touch of a flirt, specially for a gold. She doesn't have any charade though of being a good girl, and she'll do just what she pleases. She wants to go to the beach, to shells what the rest of the weyr wants her to do! Nobody is going to tell her what to do unless they are higher in rank, and only the weyrwoman and the weyrleader could possibly higher in rank than her. If it is anybody else, she might just do the opposite, because she feels like it and she can. She has goals to be the weyrwoman's dragon one day.

The extra small yellow egg rocked harder and harder until it exploded its yellow pieces all over. Out of the egg came a tiny copper, glaring at anyone who even looked at him. It looked like he was wrinkling his nose at the choice of candidates. He followed some unkown call, the call of the wild. Eagerly he went toward where the Moonstruck island fair leader awaited young dragons. The meet was tuff, but at least he wouldn't be one of those pampered dragons...
Dragon's Name: Schachth (Schach is german for chess) Color: Copper Age: Just born Appearance: This copper is an extra small and wild little dragon. His hide is bright at the moment, though it shows the wildness in patchiness on his hide. Personality: He is quite the wild boy. He hates pampered dragons and he is quite ferocious and clever, knowing how to twist dragons around his wing tip has helped him survive even with his small size.

Deran nudged Irilia as the gold hatched. "Go on. Try to get her..."
Iri shook her head, the big female was already heading for somebody else. "She's pretty, but not mine."
No regret there. There were still plenty of eggs, and she might even be left...even the island dragons did not always choose all of the candidates.
As long as no pink chose Deran. She willed that with all of her strength.
A copper hatched next, and Deran held his breath...although, no, he didn't want that one. Too small to catch many females. On the other hand, when it went wild...
"Come on, the rest of you, hatch. We're waiting."
"Impatient," Iri retorted.

The extra large cinnamon egg was the next to show cracks. The eggs just sort of crumpled when a gorgeous colored Teal stepped out with all the dignity he could muster as a baby. With a proud posture he stumbled over to Deran and fell in the boy's arms. He was tired after holding up that facade.
Dragon's name: Einsth (eins means 1 in German) Color: Teal Appearance: This dragon is a Teal colored dragon that has blue swirled around on him. He is an extra large. Personality: He will do anything to keep his dignity. He is very bossy and thinks others should sere him. He gets violent when things don't go his way. He is very kind and affectionate to those he likes (his rider, his rider's sister, and in the future a mate) other beware.

Nocia heard the humming and with all the other candidates going to get their robes, even the biggest deadglow in the Weyr would have been able to figure out that the Hatching was imminent and she should do likewise. Her normally nimble fingers seemed to have all turned into thumbs as she struggled to get the robe on. Too bad she hadn't had time to embroider it like she'd dreamed of at Glory Island, but it would have to do. Well, it was on, and that was about the best that could be said at this point. The struggle had left her hair all in a mess and there was no time to fix it. Her dragon might suicide if she wasted time on something unimportant like that!
By the time she'd reached the Sands, her hair was slightly less disorderly due to the frantic attempts at smoothing it with her hands, but nonetheless the young woman didn't look as composed as she had hoped she would look. Nocia reached the Sands in time to see the first egg, a large, reddish purple one hatch into a beautiful, if snobbish seeming gold. What would happen to her now? A copper hatched and headed right outside, disdain for the Candidates written in his every motion.

The banter with his sister helped. The last Hatching, they'd been fighting and weren't talking to each other. Gold, Impressed to a girl. Copper, gone wild.
Then another egg, bursting open. It wasn't one he'd paid that much attention to, and for all of Iri's joking, teals tended to go wild. The Weyr held very few of the gorgeous dragons, and it was a shame, this one was an unusually fine specimen. As large as one could ask for, beautifully proportioned. The gold had been pretty, the copper handsome, this teal? He could not take his eyes off of what had to be the most gorgeous and special dragon ever hatched. "Iri..." he whispered.
And then the teal was moving, and he moved as if he -knew- he was the best dragon on Pern, dignity and arrogance etched in him.
"Deran, be careful."
Why was Iri telling him to...oh. The teal had crossed the space between them with surprising speed and grace for a newly hatched dragon. And hatchlings sometimes mauled candidates, but this one just looked at him, and their eyes met, and he just...knew.
He knew everything, and he was on his knees as the teal collapsed into his arms...hatching was hard work.
"Let's get you some food, Einsth. We can conquer the Weyr...tomorrow."
He did see the look on Iri's face, it registered...that she had been joking about teal. But kidding, it seemed, on the square.
And he was proud to have ensured -this- beauty didn't go wild.

At that moment the Dawn egg and the rocky egg hatched simultaneously. The Dawn egg was a midnight and the rocky egg was a Teal. The teal, who had just hatched accidentally bumped the sandy egg that had a mad looking Fire come out of it. The fire in its anger struck out at the other medium sized dragon. The Teal became angry and lept at the fire throught, only to be lost in a roll of motion with the poor midnight looking on. Then the two broke up and went away, trying to find somewhere to go. They had heard their mother get mad at them for fighting. None of the fairs wanted half dead dragons, and so the poor dragons who had no one on the sands for them went off and died, alone, and striking at anyone who tried to feed them. While all of this was happening the midnight went off.
The midnight heard the call of the Emerald Co-leader of the Windward Island fair. She moved toward them, to be fed and kept. She was a medium sized midnight but the weyr would still be sad over her going wild, but not as sad as the two who had gone off to die.
Dragon's name: Funfth (funf is five in German, she was fifth egg to hatch, the u has to dots over it in german, but this will work...) color: midnight Appearance: She is a deep and bold black in color with little white "stars" marking her body. She will fly well at night. She is medium sized. Personality: She is a little unsure of herself and life. She is easily convinced of something she has been taught and it was easy for her to here the call of the wild Emerald and come, she hadn't been taught not to and after seeing her brothers fight she had decided that she didn't really want to impress.

Iri just sort of stared as the big teal looked about to run her brother down, then stopped and...
She'd been joking. Teasing. Insulting, even. But Deran...D'ran now, she supposed...really had Impressed a teal! And a good big one, too.
Out popped another teal, and an utterly gorgeous midnight. Now -there- was a dragon she'd be proud to claim, but the there was a fire, and the fire and teal fighting, and them hauling themselves away.
They did not Impress. There was no way they would survive to go wild. Even the midnight's departure went unnoticed. "The poor little things," she murmured.
Hatchlings, of course, knew no better. But she would have taken either of them, helped them...even if she knew it was highly unlikely either a teal or a fire would pick her. Tears pricked at her eyes. She glanced at D'ran, but he was so enwrapped in teal hide that she doubted he'd even seen.
Wild was bad enough, but those two would not, could not, live, and that was just...not...fair.

Nocia watched in horror as a pretty Midnight hatched but ignored the Candidates to go wild. At least she hadn't suicided, but that was the only good thing that could be said for this group of eggs. Along with the Midnight, a Teal and a Fire had hatched but instead of seeking their riders, the two males had attacked each other. Her gorge rose and her eyes started to tear up, blurring the Sands and the unhatched eggs. What was wrong with her that the Midnight had decided to go wild instead of Impress? She had been so pretty too. As her eyes dropped to the sand at her feet, a few tears squeezed betwen clenched eyelids to drop on the searing sand with a soft sizzle.

The girl entered. There wasn't much else to do, actually. She was late (of course) and she was shaking. Her fair of three were trying to soothe her. But she was late. That was all there was to it.
Zenniel swore at herself, then frowned. She couldn't tell how many had hatched so far, but she did know that there were many eggs left. She wished to Impress, but she didn't know what she had to do to Impress.

Alexei applauded as a big gold Impressed to a girl. He had expected that egg to hatch a Teal, but he had been wrong before. The second dragon to hatch went wild, and he frowned. The Weyr needed dragons. At least it hadn't gone between. The next to hatch was a Teal, and he watched it closely, but it was clear the dragonet was headed for Deran. He let out a quick little laugh.
"No surprise there," Gavrie muttered, winking at his twin. In the next moment the cheerful mood evaporated, and he winced as two dragons fought. There was another wild hatchling. He sighed, wondering if all of the candidates would Impress if that kept happening.

Lainy was crying for the fire. Oh the poor fire. It had died and it was so pretty too. She did like D'ran's teal though, it was a beauty. But how she wanted a fire. Oh, if only there was such a thing as a female fire...
The next egg to crack was a dainty little Emerald from the Talc egg. The small little girl looked questioningly around, staring hard at Nocia, and then in sadness of not seeing hers she laid herself down, wanting to die. Then, she sprang off and with all of her energy ran off the sands and straight toward a girl who was 12 and had been held from the sands. My Kelma mine, Your Gitarreth found you! You tried to hide from me.
Dragon's name: Gitarreth (German for Guitar) Color: Emerald: Age: Just Born Appearance: Gitarreth is a small dragon. She is a dainty dragon, having frail looking bones. She would be a nice catch for those smaller males because even though she is small she is quite a little beauty with a light green hide that sparkles. Personality: This little dragon gets depressed easily, like when she thought that she couldn't find hers. She also loves listening to Gitar and will drag her rider all over just to listen to music from a gitar.
